Der Watzmann by David Casper Friedrich

“Old men must be explorers
Here and there does not matter
We must be still and still moving
Into another intensity”
– T.S. Eliot – ‘East Coker’ from The Four Quartets.

Need some soothing music that quietens the soul but doesn’t deaden the brain?

2011 IN REVIEW : MUSIC

Cover images of my top 15 favourite albums of 2011.

2011 was without a doubt P.J.Harvey‘s year. Let England Shake was the best album  by a mile and her interviews and concerts confirmed her as an artist at the top of her game.

Otherwise, this was a year for renewing old acquaintances rather than making fresh discoveries.

The welcome return of Gillian Welch (and Dave Rawlings) was an event and the album proved well worth the eight year wait.

It was also a nice surprise  that Charalambides released another Kranky studio work, a belated follow-up to 2007’s Likeness and as consistently excellent as ever. Continue reading

LAST.FM LOVED TRACKS

I have has a Last.Fm account since 12th November 2004 and been a subscriber since April 2006.
At one time I never used the ‘Loved tracks’ feature but recently I’ve started clicking more regularly.

The recent selection shows Bob Dylan is still a dominant force with one original and two covers. I’ve also been listening a lot to Jeff Buckley having belatedly bought the legacy edition of Grace.

The Calexico and Charalambides tracks are long standing favourites and I don’t know why it has taken me so long to officially love them.

This is the list with links to Last.Fm track pages.
I Hate The Beach – Psychedelic Horseshit
The Cause Of Labour Is The Hope Of The World – Jóhann Jóhannsson
Lilac Wine – Jeff Buckley
Mama, You Been On My Mind – Jeff Buckley
North of Me (At Midday) – Fabio Orsi
Crystal Frontier – Calexico
Masters Of War – Bob Dylan
Dormant Love – Charalambides
Shelter From The Storm – Steve Adey
5 A.M.(tears below the freezing point) – Shugo Tokumaru

RANDOM SHADES OF DAY

The UK-based label Priviliged To Fail Records have done an immense public service in releasing a superb new triple CD by Fabio Orsi entitled Random Shades of Day.

Fabio is originally from Taranto, Italy but is now based in Berlin. He is such a prolific artist  that it is hard to keep track of his release schedule, not least because many of his recordings come out as limited runs on small labels or as self released CDRs.

This box set is therefore invaluable as it includes two CDs of previously unreleased and out-of-print material spanning his career to date. As an added bonus, a third disc is a four-part piece of all new tunes from which the album gets its title.

His stock in trade is ambient electronica using extended drones, keyboard/ guitar loops, eery voices and found sounds. Continue reading

ITALY’S NEW WEIRD TARANTELLA

I wish I could say that living in Italy gives me a unique insight into aspects of the country’s underground music scene. Unfortunately, I do not move in such privileged circles so a lot of the time I, like anyone else, make discoveries by chance, more often than not in cyberspace. Continue reading
