PRIMETIME directed by Lance Oppenheim (USA, 2026)
This is a slick, well-written, admirably performed drama but it left me wondering what exactly the movie was meant to achieve. It provides a good vehicle for Robert Pattinson to show off his acting prowess but to what end?
Pattinson looks and sounds like Chris Hansen the presenter of NBC’s ‘To Catch A Predator’ series. Like so many movies, it is “Inspired by true events” and in this case you can verify the accuracy of this statement by checking clips on You Tube.
Aside from a few short scenes showing the off-screen lives of the participants, the main drama is in watching the mechanics of the sting operations designed to flush out potential sexual predators.
Technically speaking, the individuals entrapped in this way are innocent of any serious crimes. The sexed-up conversations in fake message boards show their intension to corrupt minors although this detail is complicated by the fact that their potential victims are actors. Criminal law usually requires an actual overt act rather than pure thought or unexecuted intent.
The morality behind the show is dubious to say the least, To sustain an audience requires not merely locating and apprehending potential perpetrators but to continually heighten the shock value. The ideal targets are therefore those pursuing ‘respectable’ careers as teachers, carers or lawyers.
It is highly debatable whether being framed and shamed in this way serves as a deterrent to other predators. The main purpose of the show is patently to attract and maintain a primetime audience. In other words, it is driven by ratings rather than retribution.
