LAST.FM LOVED TRACKS

I have has a Last.Fm account since 12th November 2004 and been a subscriber since April 2006.
At one time I never used the ‘Loved tracks’ feature but recently I’ve started clicking more regularly.

The recent selection shows Bob Dylan is still a dominant force with one original and two covers. I’ve also been listening a lot to Jeff Buckley having belatedly bought the legacy edition of Grace.

The Calexico and Charalambides tracks are long standing favourites and I don’t know why it has taken me so long to officially love them.

This is the list with links to Last.Fm track pages.
I Hate The Beach – Psychedelic Horseshit
The Cause Of Labour Is The Hope Of The World – Jóhann Jóhannsson
Lilac Wine – Jeff Buckley
Mama, You Been On My Mind – Jeff Buckley
North of Me (At Midday) – Fabio Orsi
Crystal Frontier – Calexico
Masters Of War – Bob Dylan
Dormant Love – Charalambides
Shelter From The Storm – Steve Adey
5 A.M.(tears below the freezing point) – Shugo Tokumaru

IN MYSPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM

I have always hated MySpace. The website design reminds me of brash junk mail and gives me a headache when I try to figure out just what resources it offers.

When it started out in 2003, it at least provided a world wide window for unsigned or struggling bands but now this service is much better catered for by sites like Soundcloud and Bandcamp.

If you want another outlet or to see how many people are listening to your music there’s also Last.Fm.

As far as social networking goes, it may have been the most popular site in June 2006 but nowadays they haven’t a hope in hell of competing with the Facebook juggernaut.

A takeover by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporations in 2005 and more recent attempts at an ‘awesome’ makeover don’t convince me that the site is anything more a sinking ship. Since 2008, user growth has stagnated. They have laid off 30% of its workforce and in April 2009 they made the  drastic move of replacing longtime CEO and co-founder Chris DeWolfe with Owen Van Natta. He would have to be a Steve Jobs-like genius to pull things around.

Seven years is a lifetime on the Internet and MySpace is a website which has been unable to adapt to survive in the face of changing tastes and challenges. Start writing the obituaries now.

ANIMAL MY SOUL ON LAST.FM

Not only have I committed to writing a post a day in 2011 but I have also decided to set up a group on Last.Fm which I can use to link all the musical connections of my blog entries. If you use Last.Fm please drop by and it would be nice if you could also join so we could get our very own Animal My Soul radio station. Cool, or what?

CRACKS IN THE LAST.FM COMMUNITY

I  have been a contented subscriber of Last.Fm since 2004.

The reason I am happy to pay is because it enables me to listen to the on-line radio – either one based on my personal tags or, more often, group radios or play-lists linked to particular artists or genres.

My motivation is not to listen to music I already know or have in my collection but to make fresh discoveries , mainly of those artists working outside the mainstream channels.

It would,of course, be great if such a service could be provided free but I think to expect this for nothing is unrealistic.  Last.Fm is not a charity and needs money to survive.  For the price of a cappuccino & cake I get a monthly dose of great music.

There may be good economic reasons why it makes sense to charge people in Europe and the rest of the world for a service that users in the UK, USA & Germany get for free but it doesn’t take a genius to realise that such a proposal is going to cause resentment. Continue reading
