WOMEN’S BODIES

Lorella Zanardo

Lorella Zanardo

Having lived in Italy for the past 13 years, it is something of a relief to see a growing protest against the way women are portrayed on the national TV. This is powerfully articulated in the excellent short documentary by Lorella Zanardo called Il Corpo Delle Donne. An English version of this film (Women’s Bodies) can be seen on the related blog and an article about this has appeared in todays’s Guardian.

Zanardo admits that prior to making this film she didn’t watch much television.  A friend challenged her feminist credentials by saying that she could know nothing about women unless she watched more. She recorded around 400 hours and reduced this to around 25 minutes which show clearly how young women (there are very few over the age of 40) are used as adornments. This is something she expected to see;.what she didn’t expect, and what the film shows, is how they are routinely humiliated in the name of entertainment.

Her motive for making the film was to open a debate and in this respect she has already succeeded. The timing couldn’t be more perfect given the recent controversy over Berlusconi’s ‘escorts’.

I’m sure there are many who will argue that these women choose to appear in this way and that they are willing accomplices. In part, this is true but TV is such a powerful medium that it does not simply reflect trends but actually creates them. In other words, TV establishes the role models and one of the key issues is that smart women who don’t fit the super-babe image aren’t given any significant airtime.

Reconstructed red blooded men need to enter this debate too. Taunts like “Whassa matter donta you lika the sexy woman?” need to countered  – and while we’re about it, a few more intelligent men on the box wouldn’t go amiss!

BRING ON THE NUBILES

Perhaps unwittingly, but then again perhaps not, Bologna University are guilty of backing Silvio Berlusconi’s dumbed down and sexed-up representation of Italy in the 21st Century.

In the new poster campaign for the Polo di Romagna  the four branches of the University in this region – Ravenna, Forlì, Rimini and Cesena –  are represented by four sexy Caucasian  super-heroines – two blondes, two brunettes.  ‘Le Fantastiche 4’ are personifications of Berlusconi’s new Italy and a marked contrast to The United Colors of Benetton branding of mixed race harmony.

Herr B has shamelessly declared that Italy is not a multi-ethnic nation – a move motivated by the desire to label foreigners as enemies of the state and destroyers of liberty.

I’m a ‘straniero’ here myself but since I’m white and English that apparently doesn’t count. Africans and Eastern Europeans get a rawer deal. Instead of embracing diversity and looking for ways of implementing a humane policy of immigration the right wing  Freedom Party (sic) is bent on delivering  sound bites that kow-tow to Fascists and bigots.

On top of this, the recent exposure of Berlusconi’s harem furthers the principle that  beddable babes trump women with brains.

To use sex so blatantly to market higher education is indefensible at any time,  but is particularly misguided at a time when the sordid details of Berlusconi’s private life expose the rampant chauvinistic culture at the heart of his government.

GOOD vs EVIL IN AQUILA

Disasters bring out the best in people.

The wave of sympathy that has followed the earthquake in Abruzzo, Central Italy has manifested itself in a spontaneous outpouring of shared grief and generosity towards those who have lost loved ones or whose homes have been reduced to rubble. Continue reading

DEFYING THE MAFIA

When hiring a car in England this year, the young guy who took my booking information was curious about what life was like in Italy. “Have you got the credit crunch?” he asked before reverting to the default option query : “Have you still got the Mafia, then?”

Aside from the three Ps ( pizza, pasta and Pavarotti) the English cannot quite get the image of the Godfather out of their heads. Think Italy and Mafia is an immediate word association.

I suppose national stereotypes work like this. When Italians think of the English they think of James Bond, Mr Bean and the Royal Family. So you can imagine an Englishman at a Hertz Rental in Rome being asked “Have you still got the Queen, then?”

Families are always especially fascinating especially when they are so disfunctional, anachronistic and ruthless.

But enough about the Royal Family! This is a post about the Mafia and in particular an excellent new book by my good friend Tom Behan called simply ‘Defiance’ and subtitled ‘The story of one man who stood up to the Sicilian Mafia’. Continue reading

GOMORRA

Book cover

I have just seen the amazing new movie ‘Gomorra’ directed by Matteo Garrone which was rightly hailed at the latest Cannes Film Festival.

Imagine the Baltimore of HBO’s ‘The Wire’ transferred to the mean streets of Naples and you’ll get a flavour of its power. It oozes authenticity mixing remarkable performances by non-actors and actors who speak with such a strong Neapolitan and Casalese dialect that it has to be subtitled even for Italian audiences. Continue reading
