Two legitimate responses to the excesses of 21st century capitalist imperialism and its attendant populist gaslighting include contemplative withdrawal or confrontational fury. The music by the artists at the 15th edition of the three day Transmissions festival (Tagline: “Exploring the sound”)  in Ravenna, Italy provided potent examples of both.

In the foyer of Teatro Rasi, the festival venue, was a small exhibition of mobile phone photos taken by Adriano Zanni.  These are shots of the petrochemical plant in Ravenna’s Piallassa Valley which Michelangelo Antonioni used as the setting for his celebrated film ‘Red Desert’ (Il Desert Rosso)  in 1964.  Writing about this film for The Village Voice in 2017, Bilge Ebiri states that Antonioni’s vision “can never be reduced to simple laments for the spiritual pollution of the world.”  Zanni quotes the Italian director as  saying that “even factories can be equipped with great beauty” and his ‘ Red Desert Chronicles’ portfolio is presented in romanticized terms as “a theatre of dreams and hopes, toil and work, a stage of majestic grandeur.”

Shellac at Beaches Brew Festival

Beaches Brew – Ravenna’s annual four-day musical extravaganza at Hani-Bi beachside club/bar is a cool free festival which helps launch Italy’s summer outdoor concert season in style.

The friendly, relaxed mood is enhanced by a lack of any visible policing. The only sign of any security is a bag check at the entrance to make sure you have no glass bottles (or bombs). Continue reading

READY FOR MERCURY REV

revJust reviewed Mercury Rev’s marvelous new album The Light In You for Whisperin’ & Hollerin’. You can read it here.

The album is out on Bella Union Records on October 2nd.

I am really looking forward to seeing the band on their one and only date in Italy at the Bronson Club in Ravenna in November.

Here is the video to the single. Are You Ready? is the question. Yes is the answer.

WHITE HILLS IN RAVENNA

WHITE HILLS live at the Bronson Club, Ravenna, Italy – 23rd April 2015

White Hills got a cameo spot in Jim Jarmusch’s Vampire flick ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ and being a cult band in a cult movie is as close to superstardom as they are likely to get.

Undeterred by a lack of mass following, they continue to put out great albums, the latest Walks For Motorists (which I reviewed for Whisperin’ & Hollerin), is well represented in the show tonight. From it, they kick off with the punchy No Will which morphs into the motorik drone of Lead The Way. Continue reading

THE UPWARD ART OF ONEIDA

ONEIDA live at the Bronson Club, Ravenna, Italy (19th Match 2015)

ONEIDA - art but not arty

ONEIDA – art but not arty

The support slot for this midweek show belongs to People Of The North (POTN), a case of ‘meet the new band, same as the old band’ since the five members are the same as headliners Oneida (pronounced OH – NEED- ER).

POTN play a meandering 45 minute piece which I assume was improvized. There are noodling lulls here and there but things get interesting when surges of keyboard, drum and guitar interchanges build momentum;  like Krautrock played with New York attitude. Continue reading
