The Windrush Betrayal

The Windrush Betrayal : Exposing the Hostile Environment by Amelia Gentleman (Guardian Faber, 2019)

Betrayal is a strong word. It means calling out disloyalty, deception and, above all, a violation of trust. It is absolutely the right word to describe the trauma and destruction of the lives for those now referred to as the Windrush generation,

Jamaica gained independence on 19th July 1962. Before that it was part of the British Empire. This meant that passengers who disembarked from the SS Empire Windrush ship at Tilbury Docks in England on 22nd June 1948 were officially British citizens.

With hindsight, the problems these passengers subsequently faced could have been forseen. Eleven Labour MPs wrote to Clement Atlee, the Prime Minister of the time, proclaiming “An influx of coloured people domiciled here is likely to impair the harmony, strength and cohesion of our people and social life and cause discord and unhappiness among all concerned.” Faced with such blatant racism, perhaps the only surprise was how long it was before the proverbial shit hit the fan.

Not one to stay anonymous, Russell Brand mixes with the Occupy London protesters.

Not one to stay anonymous, Russell Brand mixes with the Occupy London protesters.

Up until now I’ve never been a massive fan of Russell Brand but he went way up in my estimation after making Jeremy Paxman look like a floundering twerp in the Newsnight Interview which has gone viral.

Brand has never made a secret of his serial addictions to drugs, sex and porn or that he is a shameless attention seeker. On the contrary, he has built his stage persona around these vices. He is only half joking when he says that he is going for a look that crosses Jack Sparrow with Spartacus.

It was clear that Paxman didn’t expect him to come up with such an articulate and forceful response to his usual sneery line of questioning.

For someone who has built his reputation on exposing the shameful lies and deceit that is the stock in trade of politicians, Paxman was put on the back foot by Brand’s entirely logical conclusion that voting changes nothing.

Now while Paxman blasts his peers for appearing on Strictly Come Dancing, Brand shows that his backing for people’s democracy by joining the massed ranks of the Occupy London protest.

As a multimillionaire comedian he makes an unlikely revolutionary but by bringing these issues back into the headlines  he’s doing far more good for Britain than David Cameron and his cronies ever will.

British PM, David Cameron, has refused to back a ban on the publication of  photos of Page 3 topless models in The Sun tabloid ‘newspaper’. He argues that to do so would be to an invasion of consumers’ right to personal choice.

By implication, he sees no fundamental harm in pictures of semi naked women being used to sell papers.

It’s interesting, and ironic, that this story has broken at the same time as his party announce legislation to censor online pornography.

I see these two issues as intrinsically connected in a way that Cameron and the Conservative Party do not.

Allow me to explain.

There is nothing illegal in what The Sun chooses to publish and, since it is the UK’s top-selling newspaper, it is arguable what they print is wholly in tune with what the great British public wants.

Governments cannot legislate against bad taste, nor should they attempt to do so. Continue reading
