12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B. Peterson (Penguin Random House, 2018)

"Chaos is the domain of ignorance itself. It’s unexplored territory" - Jordan B. Peterson.
"Chaos is order yet undeciphered" - José Saramago (The Double)

jordanThe book ambitiously seeks to find common ground between a series of dichotomies such as crime vs punishment, Christianity vs Atheism, sacrifice vs impulsiveness, constraint vs liberty, fidelity vs promiscuity and, most important of all, order vs chaos.

It is the work of Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, a clinical psychologist  and professor of psychology who has taught at Harvard and Toronto universities.

More by design than accident, Peterson has become a key social media influencer thanks to numerous TV appearances plus a series of university and public lectures posted on You Tube. The book summarizes his core beliefs and advocates rules which he maintains will help us become better citizens with the added advantage of helping to fulfill our ambitions.

He states that “making your life better means adopting a lot of responsibility, and that takes more effort and care than living stupidly in pain and remaining arrogant, deceitful and resentful.” Central to his argument is that the weak are lured by the promise of unfettered freedom which only leads to chaotic, self destructive habits. Not one to stay anonymous, Russell Brand mixes with the Occupy London protesters.

Not one to stay anonymous, Russell Brand mixes with the Occupy London protesters.

Up until now I’ve never been a massive fan of Russell Brand but he went way up in my estimation after making Jeremy Paxman look like a floundering twerp in the Newsnight Interview which has gone viral.

Brand has never made a secret of his serial addictions to drugs, sex and porn or that he is a shameless attention seeker. On the contrary, he has built his stage persona around these vices. He is only half joking when he says that he is going for a look that crosses Jack Sparrow with Spartacus.

It was clear that Paxman didn’t expect him to come up with such an articulate and forceful response to his usual sneery line of questioning.

For someone who has built his reputation on exposing the shameful lies and deceit that is the stock in trade of politicians, Paxman was put on the back foot by Brand’s entirely logical conclusion that voting changes nothing.

Now while Paxman blasts his peers for appearing on Strictly Come Dancing, Brand shows that his backing for people’s democracy by joining the massed ranks of the Occupy London protest.

As a multimillionaire comedian he makes an unlikely revolutionary but by bringing these issues back into the headlines  he’s doing far more good for Britain than David Cameron and his cronies ever will.

SACHSGATE – QUE?

The innocent victim

First things first: Russell Brand is a loose cannon and Jonathan Ross is a twat.

These things were known when they were employed by the BBC. They are both rent-a-mouths whose risque and often juvenile humour gave the otherwise ultra-conservative Radio 2 the illusion of being hip and daring.

The furore over the messages left on Andrew Sachs answering machine broadcast on their show is therefore both entirely predictable and hugely exaggerated.

The irony is that when the show was first aired there were practically no complaints.  Only when the self appointed arbitrators of taste and decency – the even more ultra-conservative Daily Mail – took them to task did  the shit hit the proverbial.

In other words the controversy is almost entirely manufactured by a tabloid that affects to maintain a squeaky clean moral code while supporting the pornography of rampant capitalism.

At the centre of the story is actor Andrew Sach’s granddaughter Georgina Baille who doesn’t  deny that she slept with Brand (who hasn’t?!).  Ross and Brand joked about the fact that Brand had “fucked her” and used a condom which is hardly exposing intimate bedroom secrets. When I first heard the story I imagined Baille as a prim and innocent women drawn into the public eye by these ‘nasty’ men.

But let’s be honest – does she really look like a blushing violet?  She is someone who once auditioned as a Page 3 girl for The Sun and is described by the Mail as a “burlesque dancer” who performs in a girl group called the Satanic Sluts.

As she tells of her ‘shock and outrage’ she is crying all the way to the bank.

Brand and Ross’ show was purile but also typical of the Beeb’s dumbed down standards. The whole thing is a storm in a teacup with the only silver lining being that it might mean we finally see the back of Jonathan Ross.
