THE GRAVITY OF EXISTENCE

GRAVITY directed by Alfonso Cuarón (USA, 2013)

Hedonistic sex and conspicuous consumerism are staples of the American film industry so a high grossing, critically acclaimed movie that includes neither is worth celebrating.

I’m not knocking the joy of fucking and shopping per se, but as a philosophical basis for a fulfilling life I don’t regard these recreational activities as the be all and end all.

In Gravity the immeasurable vastness of the universe serves as a spectacular metaphor for human potential and isolation, putting our existence into context by showing the relative insignificance of mankind. Continue reading

EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE directed by Stephen Daldry (USA, 2011)

Having read a few reviews prior to seeing this movie (always a mistake), I was all set to entitle this post EXTREMELY LAME & INCREDIBLY CONTRIVED. This only goes to show that you should always keep an open mind and shouldn’t take what critics say as gospel.

Steven Daldry’s movie is contrived but it is not lame.

The British director actually makes a pretty decent stab at translating a tricky story on such a sensitive topic to the big screen without laying on the sentiment too thickly. It isn’t perfect but is not the turkey some make it out to be. Continue reading

INDECENT PROPOSAL

THE PROPOSAL directed by Anne Fletcher (USA, 2009)

TheProposal_1shtAnyone looking for proof that Hollywood movies are getting dumber need look no further than this. The preposterous plot is lazy and the chemistry between to two ‘stars’ Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds  would barely fill a pipette.

It’s worth seeing only for the performance of ex-Golden Girl, Betty White and for the beautiful scenery of Alaska.

Bullock as pushy, ball breaking boss is totally unconvincing and aside from his admiration for her pert behind it’s hard to see how and why Reynolds falls for her.  As a cut and thrust book editor Bullock rapidly seems to forget all about her work commitments. The script follows tried and tested formulas complete with a cringe inducing public declaration of love

Appalling stuff!!
