Today is the last full day of my mini break in London.

Perfect Englishmen?
I don’t watch Royal weddings or take much interest in test matches.
I lived in Birmingham and London but would never identify myself as a ‘Brummie’ or a ‘Londoner’.
I loathe DIY and quitting a soul-destroying 9 to 5 job was one of my better decisions.

Hard to believe the pictures on the BBC of riots in London, and beyond.
The first impressions is that this is not any genuine political protest and for commnentators like Nina Power in The Guardian to give legitimacy to the mindless thugs and opportunists engaged in this action is appalling. It’s good to read that most of the comments to her piece are strongly critical of her position.
Of course, it speaks of deep underlying social problems but divisions between haves and have nots are not new.
What is new is the means of communication between gangs and individuals out for kicks. “Word of mouth” now means Twitter, Facebook and texting which speeds up the escalation of the violence.
There is no logic to these actions as these rioters are essentially destroying the communities they live in.
All deeply sickening and very sad.

London’s calling. Today I go back to my roots, flying to Gatwick and spending a few days in London Town followed by a trip to my home town of Lichfield.
For the next ten days I hope to be amassing material for this blog but won’t be writing much on the road.
I’ve scheduled a series of ‘backtracking’ posts so I keep up my target of maintaining a post-a-day.
I’m looking forward to getting away from the stifling heat of Italy but the prospect of ten days with a sullen teenager who’d be happier staying at home doesn’t bode well for an entirely relaxing break.
Time will tell.
