2011 IN REVIEW : BLOGGING

I DID IT!!  I signed up for the WordPress Postaday challenge and with this post I have achieved this goal. Congratulations to me!

I originally signed up for the daily post prompts from WordPress but quickly found these more irritating than helpful. I didn’t like them because the assumption seemed to be that blog posts are always somewhere between personal diary entries, motivational messages and confessionals. This is not why I blog.

I disliked these for the same reason I don’t like the new sidebar setting me a new blogging target every time I make a post. I prefer to feel free to post what I want; to invent my own prompts and set my own goals. Continue reading

INTERNET ADDICTION QUIZ

Good to learn that, according to the online Internet Addiction Quiz I am in control of my usage and don’t need to seek psychological help. I scored 42 which puts me in the safe category.

I am guilty of saying ‘just a few minutes more’ when I’m online and frequently find it helps relieve depression but this is not something I am too concerned about. I admit though that this year I’ve been getting a bit testy when I fear I might not be able to keep my pledge to write a blog-a-day.

Do the test and see what you score.

HOMEWARD BOUND

London’s calling. Today I go back to my roots, flying to Gatwick and spending a few days in London Town followed by  a trip to my home town of Lichfield.

For the next ten days I hope to be amassing material for this blog but won’t be writing much on the road.

I’ve scheduled a series of ‘backtracking’ posts so I keep up my target of maintaining a post-a-day.

I’m looking forward to getting away from the stifling heat of Italy but the prospect of ten days with a sullen teenager who’d be happier staying at home doesn’t bode well for an entirely relaxing break.

Time will tell.

HANG THE STATS

Control Room by Peter Kennard

As the WordPress postaday challenge nears the half-year mark I am still keeping my blogging head above water.

I had an idea that posting something every day would boost the daily views. I, and I’m sure other WordPress users, study their stats on a daily basis willing the bar charts to blossom and grow as the weekly/month hits to escalate. In my case this surge hasn’t happened. I tick over with around 100 views a day.

Short of deliberately posting something provocative or scandalous I’m at a loss as to how to change this.

I console myself with the thought that when I signed up to WordPress it was never my intention to set Cyberspace alight, merely to give a public space for rant, review and reflect on my little corner of the world.

This I will continue to do as it feels good to get things off my chest and into the public domain so I’ll decided not to lose sleep and blog on regardless.
