A MODEL FOR LANGUAGE TEACHING

As I try to psyche myself up for another term , I need to be reminded of  this check list of principles I found in Earl W.Stevick’s inspiring book ‘Humanism In Language Teaching’ which is available in PDF form here. Many of the principles could equally be adapted as general guidelines  for parents.
  • Kindness is more effective than coercion. Firmness is more effective than permissiveness.
  • When students feel good about the course and about themselves, they will learn better than when they do not.
  • Any method that does not require serious and occasionally onerous effort from learners will be ineffective.
  • Within us (or within our grasp) we have undreamed-of possibilities.
  • Concentrated, intuitive introspection together with courage and patience will make possible unlimited growth in constructive and socially desirable directions.
  • Skilled and sensitive understanding of another person can release that other person’s whole self so it can deal adequately with whatever needs to be dealt with, whether cognitive or otherwise.
  • Rational, critical inquiry can deal adequately with everything that really needs to be dealt with.
  • A model of teaching (or thinking) which makes full use of one’s own personal strengths is superior to models which demand strengths of other kinds. (Corollary: a model which demands strength in an area where one is weak is misguided.)

SELF HELP ME

heal-your-lifeHave you ever noticed how self books usually have brash unimaginative covers. If they have any image at all it is usually a naff shot of the author  looking immensely pleased with himself/ herself.

If not using a photo of the writer, publishers clearly have to take the plunge and decide if the cover image should be  male or female, black or white, young or old. Whatever they come up with would decide the demographics on who buys it.

So the solution is, more often than not, to use bright colours and a big bold typeface to emphasise the assertive title.

A case in point is : Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy” by David Burns, M.D which is recommended to the writer of a pretty silly article ‘I’m so bored, I’m even bored with being bored’ in The Salon.

I confess I  did once buy ‘You Can heal Your Life’ by Louise L. Hay (rainbow cover/bold typeface) but in general I remain deeply suspicious of such titles and now I would probably request a brown paper bag in a store if I actually took the plunge and bought one.

Maybe the problem is I just haven’t found a title that speaks to my needs.

So, where can I find a self help book that helps me find the perfect self help book for me?

YCU23D?

U2’s concert movie is heralded the first ever live-action digital 3-D film. Is this novelty enough to make it worth seeing?

IMO – the answer is no.

The publicity will tell you different, assuring you that it is a unique visual experience and that you feel part of a show like never before. The implication being that when Bono reaches out you will feel you could literally give him a hand in saving the planet. Continue reading

THE CREEPIEST DAVID LYNCH CHARACTER

By consensus, the creepiest Lynch character is usually seen as a toss up between Frank Booth in Blue Velvet and The Mystery Man in Lost Highway.

These antagonists in David Lynch’s movies play a crucial role in creating the scary mood and highlighting the dark side of the male protagonists. Continue reading

THE BALLAD OF A SERIAL KILLER

I feel a bit dumb that I have only just sussed that Sufjan Steven’s gentle ballad John Wayne Gacy Jr  from his 2005 album Illinoise is about a notorious serial killer.  If you read the Wiki entry on Gacy and then listen to the song, you realise what a masterly job Sufjan did of capturing the sadness and horror caused by this monster who preyed on young men.

I like the way the quietness of the song is so at odds with the dark subject matter. This is obviously what got me fooled on my original superficial listening. That, and pure ignorance!

I just came across this video using a 1950s public information film  which captures the mood of the song perfectly.

While on the subject of Sufjan, whatever happened to his much lauded project to release an album for all the United States. After Michigan and Illinois, zilch ….. was it all a publicity stunt?
