Have you ever noticed how self books usually have brash unimaginative covers. If they have any image at all it is usually a naff shot of the author looking immensely pleased with himself/ herself.
If not using a photo of the writer, publishers clearly have to take the plunge and decide if the cover image should be male or female, black or white, young or old. Whatever they come up with would decide the demographics on who buys it.
So the solution is, more often than not, to use bright colours and a big bold typeface to emphasise the assertive title.
A case in point is : Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy” by David Burns, M.D which is recommended to the writer of a pretty silly article ‘I’m so bored, I’m even bored with being bored’ in The Salon.
I confess I did once buy ‘You Can heal Your Life’ by Louise L. Hay (rainbow cover/bold typeface) but in general I remain deeply suspicious of such titles and now I would probably request a brown paper bag in a store if I actually took the plunge and bought one.
Maybe the problem is I just haven’t found a title that speaks to my needs.
So, where can I find a self help book that helps me find the perfect self help book for me?
