SPAMMERS ON ACID

Loathing

Is this what a spammer looks like? (Acid trip image from Terry Gilliam’s Fear And Loathing in LA).

One of the many reasons why WordPress rocks is the fact that we WP bloggers don’t have to waste time hunting and killing spams.

This blog ticks along at a modest 200 or so hits a day but ,even so, it is frequently targeted by spammers on the look out for ‘unique’ words.

For example one post I wrote about dying with dignity generated spams with links to life insurance schemes.

Some expert tech-perts know better than me why these spams are written in gibberish, I’m just thankful to have a built-in filter.  At the time of writing, Akismet has protected my site from about 64,000 spam comments already.

I actually get a crazy kick out of reading some of these nonsensical messages before confining them to the cyber trash can.

I have a mental image of spammers, not as  computer generated writing programs, but as human beings who exist on a diet of magic mushrooms and any other hallucinogenic substances they can get hold of. Continue reading →

This is blog post number one thousand !!!

This is a milestone which, rather unhelpfully, leaves me lost for words!

When I started out on 25th May 2007  I never imagined blogging would become such a healthily addictive and mostly fun part of my life.

It’s reached the stage that no day seems complete until I’ve posted something – and relatively recent innovations of gaining feedback via ‘likes’ and ‘followers’ gives a modest yet satisfying feedback that keeps me hooked.

Thanks for all who have sought out or simply stumbled upon this blog.

Here’s to the next thousand which, if I keep up with a post a day, I’ll be celebrating on February 28th, 2015.

2011 IN REVIEW : BLOGGING

I DID IT!!  I signed up for the WordPress Postaday challenge and with this post I have achieved this goal. Congratulations to me!

I originally signed up for the daily post prompts from WordPress but quickly found these more irritating than helpful. I didn’t like them because the assumption seemed to be that blog posts are always somewhere between personal diary entries, motivational messages and confessionals. This is not why I blog.

I disliked these for the same reason I don’t like the new sidebar setting me a new blogging target every time I make a post. I prefer to feel free to post what I want; to invent my own prompts and set my own goals. Continue reading →

I signed up for e-music in April 2005 and according to my profile history, I have downloaded tracks from a grand total of 1,185 artists but today I decided to cancel my account.

In the six and a half years I have been a member the download and online streaming options have changed radically. For example, in 2005, there was no Spotify (launched in 2008), no Soundcloud (2007) and no Bandcamp (2008). Also, it was not so easy to find tracks and albums on blogs and I was not so genned up on P2P sites like e-mule or Soulseek.

I am grateful to e-music for helping me to discover artists like Jack Rose, Charalambides and Acid Mothers Temple but I have decided to leave what I regard as a sinking ship. Continue reading →

HANG THE STATS

Control Room by Peter Kennard

As the WordPress postaday challenge nears the half-year mark I am still keeping my blogging head above water.

I had an idea that posting something every day would boost the daily views. I, and I’m sure other WordPress users, study their stats on a daily basis willing the bar charts to blossom and grow as the weekly/month hits to escalate. In my case this surge hasn’t happened. I tick over with around 100 views a day.

Short of deliberately posting something provocative or scandalous I’m at a loss as to how to change this.

I console myself with the thought that when I signed up to WordPress it was never my intention to set Cyberspace alight, merely to give a public space for rant, review and reflect on my little corner of the world.

This I will continue to do as it feels good to get things off my chest and into the public domain so I’ll decided not to lose sleep and blog on regardless.
