PLEASURE directed by Ninja Thyberg (Sweden, 2021)

When Bella Cherry (not her real name) arrives in America from Sweden, the customs officer asks if her visit is for business or pleasure. Bella replies “Pleasure” with a wry smile. After watching this movie, I’d say she gave the wrong answer.  Having lots of sex would normally count as a pleasurable activity but when this is done for money in a mechanical, ritualistic manner then, just as in prostitution,  it falls squarely into the category of business.

It is soon clear that Thyberg’s objective is not to make a feminist movie or to criticise pornography.  We see a male dominated world in which the women consent to be exploited and abused knowing full well the implications and content of the encounters beforehand.

GOAT’S WORLD MUSIC

Goat play Voodoo Funk!

Short post today just to plug an amazing new album from Goat called World Music out on Rocket Recordings.

Who’d have thought that one one of the best freak/psych albums of the year would come from Sweden!  They’re from a village  with the unlikely name of Korpilombolo with no prior history of voodoo funk as far as I’m aware.

I’m intrigued to learn more of their background but at the same time it’s a nice change when an album seems to come out the blue and hits the bulls eye.

This is the trailer with some of the great press quotes they’ve inspired so far.

COME ON AND …..BOOM! BOOM!

When I think of Englebert Humperdinck, I always think of  the god-awful Release Me, the single which prevented The Beatles Strawberry Fields / Penny Lane from reaching number one in 1967.

Nowadays ‘the hump’ is apparently big in Eastern Europe which may be one the reasons he was selected to perform the UK’s Eurovision song – Love Will Set You Free.

At 76 , he looks in better shape than the Buranovo grannies but it still seems bizarre and wrong-headed to select him as UK’s representative.

The turgid apology for a love song he sang was also completely  out of synch with the brash showbiz image of the contest. Continue reading

FRED KINBOM

Fred Kinbom is a new name to me but I am impressed by his new EP called Quit My Job. He’s originally from Sweden but is now based in Brighton.

He plays lap steel guitar in a distinctive fashion and clearly knows where to find some ace musicians to help fashion his musical vision.

You can read my review for Whisperin’ & Hollerin’ here and I’d heartily recommend bending back your ears for the best track  Back Pocket Horn (Champion Fever Remix)   which you can hear on Sound Cloud.
