CONTAMINATED FOLK

An Italian friend recently said “I don’t like Folk music unless it’s contaminated”. I knew immediately what she meant as I share a loathing of the ‘fiddly-dee /’she moves through the fair’ school of Folk.

The verb ‘to contaminate’ in English has a negative connotation meaning “To make impure or unclean by contact or mixture”. Continue reading

ARTE Y PICO

Many thanks to Mrs Slocombe Regrets for awarding me this prize – I am not worthy! Had Peter not already got two statuettes in the bag I would have nominated this blog which not only chooses the same wordpress theme but whose tastes seem to uncannily mirror my own – it’s good to have a virtual soul mate.

Under the terms of the award I have to:
1. link the person who tagged you (see above) and publicise the Arte Y Pico blog to show the origin of this honor. (done)
2. tag 5 other bloggers by linking them(done)

Some winners have also added a list 5 unspectacular things about themselves which I have complied with. Continue reading

WHAT’S THE POINT IN NOISE MUSIC?

Too loud!

What’s the point in noise music? This is a question posed in the forums of Last.Fm. One person, by way of reply wrote:
It’s the opposite of a composition called 4′33″ written by John Cage. It is just silence, for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. It has been recorded several times and has even been broadcast on the radio.
That’s just stupid, just as noise music. In my opninion

Noise annoys. That is often the point.

NATURAL GROUPER THERAPY

Liz Harris

‘Grouper’ is the stage name of Elizabeth (Liz) Harris from Portland, Oregon.
Her debut album, Way Their Crept, was released on the Free Porcupine Society label in 2005. This was followed a year later by ‘Wide’ on the same label. Last year she put out a brilliant limited edition LP ‘Cover The Windows And Walls’ (on Root Strata) . Now her third ‘official’ full length on Type Records is about to hit the streets – charmingly entitled
‘Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill’ . Continue reading

WOMEN AND NOISE

A few random thoughts about the fascinating Women Take Back The Noise 3 cd compilation which has generated a lot of underground (and overground) publicity. It’s a strictly limited edition of 1000 and has (as I write) sold 630 – as the You Tube film shows, 30 bucks gets you a funky pack and your own noisemaker.

I haven’t bought a copy myself – opting instead for the cheapskate option of downloading the mp3 samples of some of the 47 women who have contributed!

What interests me though is the question as to how female noise differs from their masculine counterparts. The women interviewed, as with those involved in the London based HerNoise project, always manage to dodge giving a straight answer to this question preferring to focus on the buzz they get from the collaborative process.
