“Comus are largely remembered for one album, ‘First Utterances’ recorded in October 1970…… its striking gatefold cover depicts an emaciated hommunculus, skin charred to a leathery black and gagging on its own bile………the self loathing mannequin foreshadows the music’s forbidding, often savage disquiet” – Rob Young from Electric Eden.
I worry myself sometimes that I am constantly drawn to music like this rather than Mumford and fucking Sons.
This is the opening track from that album:

never worry that you aren’t drawn to mumford and sons, martin – they are like musical chicken macnuggets – bland, over-processed, a cheap imitation… stuff like that -their very existence makes the world a more mediocre place…
I was lucky enough to see Comus live last Saturday night – it was fantastic, their new material is equally as intense as First Utterance, forty odd years later!
Wow – I had no idea they were still around! Nice review of the gig, I wish I could’ve been there. I must check out the new record.
It’s a very short album but it sounded good live! Not sure what The Malgaard Suite will sound like though – the CD’s in the post and I can’t wait!
