
Thought for the day from Ian McEwan’s ‘The Daydreamer’ :
“Joining in was all very fine in its place. But far too much of it went on. In fact, he thought. if people spent less time joining in and making others join in, and spent a little time alone remembering who they were or who they might be, then the world would be a happier place and wars might never happen”.
The operative word is ‘might’ of course. This may be a simplistic argument but I firmly believe that spending time on your own is ultimately a social act. as Eudora Welty said : “True daring starts from within”.
