Fallen leavesFallen Fallen Leaves

The installation Shalekhet (Fallen Leaves) by Menasche Kadishman at the Jewish Museum in Berlin is a simple yet powerful evocation of the millions murdered by the Nazis. In designing the museum Daniel Libeskind was motivated by the belief that “without memory there can be no future”. Kadishman’s piece is in the part of the museum called the Memory Void. It consists of more than 10,000 faces cut from sheet steel which visitors are free to walk on. I found the sound of metal on metal and the sight of these faces a very moving experience.
