2011 IN REVIEW : TV

My TV year started very late. On principle, I watch as little Italian TV as possible. I prefer to follow the advice of the graffiti in the photo: ‘Turn off the TV and turn your brain back on’.

Up until November, the only way of watching UK TV was to travel to Britain. But thanks to the Hide My Ass app  I can now encrypt my  internet activity and travel virtually to  access online channels from most countries.

As an Englishman, my main interest is in BBC, ITV and Channel 4. The latter is the where I have discovered this year’s highlights. Continue reading

Too cool for Uni? - JP and Kingsley

With numerous examples from Man About The House to The Young Ones, the shared house is a kind of sitcom default option but it continues for the simple reason that it’s a formula that works.

Channel 4’s Fresh Meat is the latest proof that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to make good comedy. All you need is scriptwriters who can engineer storylines that help us laugh at familiar fears and anxieties. Continue reading

NOT BEING DENIED

TV sucks and I do my level best not to watch too much.At the same time, living in Italy, I have been frequently frustrated by not being able to watch British television which may not be perfect but at least has some wheat amongst the chaff.

I’m delighted therefore that I have finally figured out how to crack the UK i-players . The unpromisingly named Hide Your Ass  enables me to  virtually reside in the UK so I catch a number of shows I’ve only been able to read able or see short clips of on You Tube.

Today I had my first taste of the Channel 4 comedy Fresh Meat which I enjoyed and was also just in time to see the excellent one hour documentary about the great Neil Young appropriately titled ‘Don’t Be Denied’. This featured some great anecdotes and well chosen clips. I particularly loved Neil’s  description of Charles Manson as a “song spewer” rather than a song writer. Continue reading
