Avaaz have been active since 2007 but I only came across the site today through a link to their campaign against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) which threatens to undermine freedom on the Internet.
If you have not already done so, you should sign the online petition which is one of a huge number of good causes they are highlighting. This petition to EU Parliament members states:
“As concerned global citizens, we call on you to stand for a free and open Internet and reject the ratification of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), which would destroy it. The Internet is a crucial tool for people around the world to exchange ideas and promote democracy. We urge you to show true global leadership and protect our rights”.
With governments and the media being responsible for such a wealth of greed, corruption and lies, websites like Avaaz serve a vital role because they remind us that through ‘clicktivism’ people have the power to make changes.
The only real alternative is pessimism or apathy.
