In the UK bank holidays are engineered so that they occur on a Monday or a Friday. This doesn’t happen in Italy so if a day off is on a Tuesday (as it is next week for All Saints Day, 1st November) or a Thursday, it is common practice for employees and students to create a ‘ponte’ (bridge) to make a long weekend.
The bridge can even be extended if a holiday happens to fall on a Wednesday! One time I would have declared self righteously that these are official working days but I am now less inclined to whinge about these non-holidays and follow the Italians’ example and go with the flow.
