THE DEATH OF LUCIO DALLA

Lucio Dalla (4th March 1943 - 1st March 2012)

The funeral today in Bologna, on what would have been his 69th birthday, brought a public outpouring of grief and affection for singer-songwriter, Lucio Dalla.

While I have been aware of Dalla’s songs, I didn’t grow up listening to his music his passing doesn’t have the same impact. It’s times like this that bring home how much of a cultural outsider I still am, despite having lived in Italy for the past 15 years.

His sudden death is barely reported in the English media but it’s clear from the fact that an estimated 50,000 came to bid a last farewell  that his passing is felt not just as a loss to the world of entertainment but as a loss to the nation.

His songs clearly struck a chord but Dalla’s widespread appeal can also be attributed to the fact that he was such a down to earth character. He didn’t live his life in an ivory tower but followed his local soccer and basketball teams and mixed freely with ‘ordinary’ people in the city. He was someone who commanded admiration and respect even amongst those were not big fans of his music.  The fact that he was openly gay did nothing to dent his reputation; an encouraging fact given that Italy is well known for its institutionalised homophobia. Palazzo Re Enzo, Bologna - venue for Netmage 11

Netmage.11

Netmage is a three-day International Live-Media festival held every year in Palazzo Re Enzo, Piazza Nettuno,Bologna.

This is a handsome 13th century palace in which the bank of laptops and projectors make a stark, yet stylish, contrast with the chandeliers and faded murals.

This year is the third year running I have been to this event.

I was there for the final day – Saturday 22nd January – where the program was as follows:

  • Ries Straver (NL) /Adam Liever (SA) – Loffa
  • Thomas Köner/Jürgen Reble (D) – Camera Obscura
  • Home Movies/In Zaire (I) – Paper Maché
  • Luke Fowler/Keith Rowe/Peter Todd (UK)  – The Room
  • Prince Rama (USA) – I want my life back

Rather than make one long review I will be giving my thoughts and impressions of each of these in separate posts.

By way of introduction, this post gives an overview of the Netmage philosophy and aims. Continue reading

LIVE SWANS

Are you looking at me?

WANTED

Rumours of the death of Swans have been exaggerated.

I can vouch for this having experienced their ear-bruising concert at Bologna’s Locomotiv club.

The volume alone is loud enough to waken corpses and should lay to rest any notion that Michael Gira has reconvened the band as a cosy nostalgia act. These six guys may no longer be in the full flush of youth but they put any snot-nosed noise bands to shame.

Gira, at the tender age of 56 , has the look of someone rejuvenated, a fact already placed on record by the September release of the stunning new Swans album My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky.

He is clearly not kidding when he says that in performance he seeks to achieve a state of  “simultaneous self negation and rebirth”. Continue reading

PUNKS : PAST AND PRESENT

Malcolm McLaren RIP

Punk has always been as much about the spirit as the music – a state of mind, an attitude that you recognise as soon as you see or hear it.

Malcom McLaren was a master manipulator of others who had this Punk spirit – notably Johnny Rotten & Vivienne Westwood – but, personally, I would argue that he was not a bona fide Punk. I see him more as an entertainer – a Svengali-like attention grabber; a Warhol-like self publicist with an ego to match .

His slippery personality means that when you start talking in terms of integrity or honesty his reputation begins to become a little tarnished. Nevertheless, you can’t ignore the fact that, but for him, there would have been no Sex Pistols. His place in history is assured.

On the day he died, Anarchy In The UK was played on the radio both going and returning from a concert in Bologna by present day carriers of the flame, A Silver Mount Zion (SMZ) from Canada. Continue reading

NETMAGE.10

The past is now part of my future, the present is well out of hand”.
(‘Heart And Soul’ – Joy Division)

Netmage started 10 years ago in the millennial year when Bologna was selected as one of the 9 European cities of culture. It takes place in the heart of the city within an elegant 13th century palace. Paradoxically, although the assembled artists are at the cutting edge of experimental avant-garde sound and vision, the historic setting doesn’t seem incongruous. On the contrary, the post-everything music and images are, as the programme notes say, “never absent of references”.

These are my notes and impressions from day 2 of this three day event. Continue reading
