Sturmundrugs records from out of Taranto, Italy has quickly  established itself as a reliable source of abstract and alien sounds.

The label is the brainchild of Donato Epiro whose own releases go from strength to strength. As with his music, the inspirations for the Sturmundrugs catalogue can be traced back to folk traditions but you won’t find any cute ditties about laddies and lasses, Actually you won’t find any conventional songs at all. What you get instead , is a heady dose of  cutting edge ambient noise that are perfect soundtracks to solitude.

The latest  four cdrs on the label are out now for a bargain price of €7 each in Europe (€8 ROW) or, better still €22 for all four (€26 ROW).

Here’s what you get:

Architeuthis Rex – ‘The Blyssynge of the Salte’
3 tracks – Playing time 47.00 mins

1. First Blyssynge 22.47  of drone reverb that sounds like it was recorded in some deep dark well .
2. Entreum.. Sadness Erba 5.42  a soundtrack to some strange ritual ceremony
3. Last Blyssynge 18.28 –  #1 =ominous drum rhythm of  increasing intensity + some weird moaning    #2 solid drone

Credited to Antonio Blissland (or Galucci) whose previous album (“Dark as the Sea” on Utech Records) was intended as “sonic representation of the deep oceans’

Pürple Zhrö – ‘Sorgo N’Sryo’
6 tracks Playing time 72.15 min

No names of the musicians are given although they are apparently a trio from Britain. This sounds like the recording of a blacksmith from Hell forging whatever the hellish equivalent of the pearly gates are. The sleeve just lists unpronouncable track titles and tells us that the artwork is by Jean-René Guénée, Guénée also directed an appropriately freaked out video to Moowgwxool FibrilliX:

Caligine – ‘L’Autunno di Rame’
5 tracks, 31.41 mins

Caligine are a Rome-based band whose sound consists of distorted fiddles, gentle fingerpicking, weird narratives and warm strings. There are some very acid-folk vocals (in Italian) on this one.

Deep Magic – ‘Celestial Communion’
2 tracks, 58.08 mins

Deep Magic is Alex Gray and the title of this disc give you a good idea of what to expect. Nothing much happens here but the slow repetitive drones take you to another space maaan.
