For me 2019 was not a particularly memorable year for music. I found pleasure in some old favorites but made no significant new discoveries.
Mostly, female artists struck the strongest chords with me. Billie Eilish’s debut ‘When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go’ and Lana Del Ray’s ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell’ were rightly rated highly in many ‘best of’ lists.

It’s 9.30 in the evening and the temperature is still over 30 degrees. I take solace in my screen saver photograph and nurture the dream that this time next year, if all goes to plan, I’ll be where this was taken – Iceland. Travelling to this country is top of my bucket list and I intend to spend a good part of the year doing some armchair travelling before taking the actual trip.

The consistently excellent Verucchio Festival takes place every year in picturesque open air venues in a small hilltop town near Rimini in Emilia Romagna. The varied line up this year with two concerts a night includes Blonde Redhead, Seth Lakeman, José Gonsalez and an electronic night with BJ Neilsen & Hildur Gudnadottir.
The must see for me this year was Toumani Diabaté whose virtuoso kora playing I’ve long admired. Continue reading
