Photo of Diane Cluck by David Garland taken during the Spinning On Air session.

It’s been 5 years since she released an album of new material so it was good to hear Diane Cluck again on WYNC’s Spinning On Air where she sings a batch of new songs backed by drummer Anders Griffen and chats genially with David Garland.

I agree with Garland that her songs are magical and mysterious that take the listener on a journey to who knows where. They always sound like a spontaneous flow of connected or random thoughts.

She doesn’t have a traditional album in the pipeline but she has announced a scheme whereby new songs will be sponsored by fans of her music.

The Song of the Week idea is that she will write, record and digitally distribute a new song each week (four per month )for six months beginning in March 2012.

To get all 24 songs will set you back between $50 (€37) and $75 (€56); the higher price being if you want her to send two physical CDs to you. Other price options can be found on her website.

Supporting musicians may not be uppermost in people’s minds in these belt tightening days, but Diane Cluck is definitely an artist who deserves support. I’d certainly rather be paying for her to make music than help boost the profits on major record labels.

Here are two of the songs she played on the radio show; I particularly like the second one – Why Feel Alone?
